Emptying the dustbin is (usually) easy but can be messy
Emptying the dustbin is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s quick and easy and free. On the other, I need to walk into my garage and create a small dust cloud to empty it. Bags have some advantages here but I still prefer bagless collection systems.
One occasional annoyance is stragglers of hair wrapped around the interior housing of the dustbin. If this occurs, I use the red trigger button to release the outer clear canister and disconnect the hair.
A clean air filter helps maintain peak performance
The air filter will fill up with a layer of dust that, if left alone, will impact suction performance. I found that if I let it go for more than a few months with regular use, it does seem like it has less power.
The best way to clean the filter is to:
- First, remove it from the machine by unscrewing it in a counter-clockwise direction.
- Next, tap it gently against a hard surface to remove any loose debris. Then use a brush or your fingers to remove any remaining debris or dust.
- Finally wash it in warm water, being sure to rinse it thoroughly and allowing it to dry completely before reinserting it into the base. It’s important to note that the filter should never be washed in soap or detergent, or placed in the dishwasher or washing machine.
I rinse both the inside and outside of the filter, then let it dry for at least 24 hours. This aligns with Dyson’s official instructions.
You likely will not need a replacement filter if you take good care of the original. But, if you did need to replace them, they are $29 from Dyson but you can find replacement filters on Amazon as well.
Cleaning the bin and attachments
The clear dustbin can be cleaned with a damp cloth. I rarely do this since I’m not sure it matters if the bin is dirty or not. Maybe if you accidentally sucked up something unpleasant you’d want to wipe off the interior.
The soft roller (the “Laser Slim Fluffy”) pops off and I rinse that under water to clean it. Of course, this item needs to be dried for about 24 hours. This is a fairly rare maintenance task, and I typically wait until it looks dirty before washing.
Other attachments don’t disassemble for cleaning but they also don’t seem to collect much debris. So on an as-needed basis, I maintain them by wiping them with a damp cloth and inspecting for attached hair.
