Below you can find my original take on the cleaning solutions from iRobot.
iRobot recommends using their mystery cleaner
The iRobot Braava Jet M6 is a robotic mop that uses water and cleaning solution to clean floors.
The recommended cleaning solution to use with the Braava Jet M6 is the iRobot Braava Jet Hard Floor Cleaning Solution. A very small bottle came with the unit. According to iRobot, this solution is “specially formulated” to work with the Braava Jet M6 and is designed to clean and remove dirt and stains from hard floor surfaces. They also indicate that it’s important to avoid using any other cleaning solutions or detergents, as they can damage the robot or leave a residue that can affect the robot’s performance.
But I trust iRobot to make vacuums, NOT chemicals. So, after researching what others had mentioned in reviews, I decided to use diluted Bona in the tank once every 2 weeks. Bona is a fairly well-known and popular hardwood floor cleaner that we already use on our hardwood. I didn’t want to fill the tank completely full with Bona, or even use Bona every run for fear of “clogging the pipes” (not sure if this is a rational fear or not). This seems to work really well but clearly not recommended by iRobot since they aren’t the ones selling it.
iRobot took my suggestion on cleaning with Bona?
I must have been on to something here, because you can now find Bona slapped on the same label as the iRobot M6! The Braava Jet Cleaning solution is now branded with the Bona product: Bona-branded M6 Solution for purchase on Amazon.
When I wasn’t using the diluted Bona and water solution, I simply fell back to using filtered/pure water.
Buy a few extra mop pads if you use the M6 frequently
If you’re like me and like to throw your mop pad in the dirty clothes / washing machine, it may be in the queue for a day or two. So I quickly purchased these extra mop pads for the M6 from Amazon. Now, you can definitely find knockoffs for cheaper but I wanted to make sure they were as fluffy and soft as the original - need to take care of this hardwood!
After many uses, I found no damage to the floor or scratching. I am happy with these pads, and they do seem to be holding up in the washing machine.
